Legal Considerations for Gun Owners

At SSL Firearms, we’re proud to provide a safe, transparent platform for firearm enthusiasts and collectors to purchase firearms through online auction. However, if you’re considering bidding on a gun, it’s essential to understand the legal requirements involved, especially in the state of Michigan.

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned collector, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the legal landscape when purchasing a firearm through one of our auctions.

  1. Federal and State Laws Still Apply

While auctions can offer competitive prices and unique finds, all firearm transactions through SSL Firearms comply fully with federal, state, and local laws. Just because you’re buying through an auction doesn’t mean the rules are any different than if you were buying from a gun store.

  1. Who Can Legally Purchase a Firearm in Michigan?

To legally purchase a firearm in Michigan, you must meet the following basic criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old to purchase a long gun (rifles, shotguns)
  • Be at least 21 years old to purchase a handgun from a federal firearms licensee (FFL)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Not be prohibited from owning firearms under state or federal law (e.g., due to felony convictions, restraining orders, or mental health adjudications)
  1. Background Checks Are Mandatory

When you win a firearm at auction through SSL Firearms, you’ll need to complete a background check before taking possession of the gun. This is processed through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) via an FFL (Federal Firearms License) dealer.

We coordinate this process for you:

  • If you’re local, you can complete the background check at our Byron Center, MI location.
  • If you’re out of state, the firearm will be shipped to an FFL dealer near you, who will conduct the background check.
  1. Handgun Purchase Permits in Michigan

In Michigan, if you’re purchasing a handgun, you may need to obtain a purchase permit, but it depends on your situation:

  • If you do not have a Concealed Pistol License (CPL), you’ll need to get a permit prior to coming in for the transfer from your local Police Department or your county’s Sheriff’s Department to purchase a handgun.
  • If you do have a CPL, you can purchase a handgun without needing a separate permit.
  1. Shipping and FFL Transfers

SSL Firearms ships firearms only to FFL holders. Once you win an auction, you’ll need to:

  1. Have your firearms retailer, pawn shop, or individual of choice email us a copy of their FFL along with your first and last name and your invoice number.  Once we have that information and the invoice has been settled, we ship your firearm(s) to that FFL holder.  The transfer shop/individual will contact you to come in and fill out a background check once your firearm is ready for pickup.
  1. Out-of-State Buyers

If you’re buying from outside Michigan, don’t worry, we welcome buyers from across the U.S. The process is similar:

  • You bid and win through our site.
  • We ship the firearm to your local FFL.
  • You complete the background check there and take possession of your firearm legally.

Just make sure to check your state’s laws, as they may have additional restrictions or requirements beyond Michigan law.

At SSL Firearms, we’re committed to keeping every transaction safe, secure, and fully compliant with the law. Whether you’re buying a collectible antique rifle or your next carry handgun, it’s your responsibility to understand the legal process.

If you ever have questions during your purchase, our team is here to help guide you through the legal steps.
